Please take a minute to ask Surrey to join the Sue Big Oil lawsuit.

In Surrey, the impacts of climate change are already hitting hard. During the 2021 heat dome, 75 Surrey residents died  the second highest number in B.C.  and around 750 more suffered from heat stroke, dehydration, or other serious health impacts.

Surrey’s own Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy estimates that the city should be investing an average of $20 million every year this decade to protect homes and infrastructure from sea level rise and flooding. With 20% of the city in a floodplain and the risk of future damage estimated in the billions, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Yet despite securing some federal support, Surrey taxpayers are still left carrying a significant share of the cost.

Meanwhile, the fossil fuel companies driving the climate crisis continue to rake in profits while communities like Surrey are stuck footing the bill. That’s why eleven B.C. municipalities have joined the Sue Big Oil campaign — to demand that these corporations pay their fair share of the damage they’ve caused.

It’s time for Surrey to stand with them. Add your voice and urge City Council to support this important step toward climate accountability.
